ISDDE is the International Society for Design and Development in Education.

Around the world, there are accomplished people dedicated to raising the quality of design of educational processes and materials. ISSDE was formed to help this group work effectively as a coherent professional design and development community.

The focus lies on designing for math and science education.

Background paper

Earlier conferences were organized by the Shell Centre (Oxford, 2005 and 2006) and the Lawrence Hall of Science (Berkeley, 2007). In 2008 the conference will be hosted by the Freudenthal Institute.

Special theme of the 2008 conference will be the relation between design and research. At the conference we want to (1) obtain an overview of the field, (2) work on an infrastructure through which we can bridge research and professional design, and (3) investigate ways to take the first steps to more research-based educational design. The conference will have a limited number of participants (max. 100) and should be considered as a working conference. With all participants being experienced designers, the emphasis will be on discussion and on learning from each other. The conference will be structured around topic group discussions, demo sessions and plenaries. Plenary presentations will be given by Alan Schoenfeld, Paul Black, Koeno Gravemeijer and Jan de Lange.

Conference 2008:
Linking design research to professional educational design

June 29 - July 2, Egmond aan Zee, the Netherlands

The design and development of educational approaches and materials is the work of professionals. Generally their work is based on personal experience and informed practice, more than on a shared knowledge base on educational design. The goal of ISDDE is to help establish such an organized and research-based knowledge base. In this conference we will focus on the role of design research in achieving this goal.

For professional designers it is often hard to find their way in the extended world of educational research and to reap the fruits of research results. It is even harder to translate this knowledge into new and successful designs. Design research can play a role in improving this situation. In design research the design of educational tools itself is used as a strategy for developing and refining theories. Building knowledge and designing materials go hand in hand. There is, however, a gap to bridge between design researchers who are working and designing in an academic environment and professional designers who design the majority of generally used educational materials and tools.

Who can attend?

The Society is still in its development stage. For the first three conferences membership and / or attendance were by invitation at the discretion of the Chair. The members are designers and project leaders with outstanding records, as well as a number of representatives from government agencies and foundations that fund such work.

ISDDE 2008 will be open for all designers/researchers who feel affinity with the goals of the society. The number of participants, however, will be limited to 100.

Topic groups

In the topic group sessions the emphasis will be on discussion and exchange of knowledge, not on presentations.
