Abstract

As the Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS) in 2007 revealed, Indonesian students' performance in the domain of algebra is very low compared to many other countries. What are the reasons for this disappointing outcome? How can we improve student performance in this domain? As an initial step to address the why-question, this study investigated student difficulties in initial algebra. What are the most important stumbling blocks?
