![]() ![]() Context Some fish biologists figure out how to protect species, and manage fisheries. Other fisheries biologists work to assess how many fish are in the ocean, a river, or lake. This requires a lot of field work to observe the fish, usually by capturing and counting them. Role Students are not placed explicitly in the role of a fish biologist but they do investigations that can be compared with the work of a fish biologist. Activity Students investigate an estimation strategy that involves catching and marking a small number of fish. Then they carry out an experiment in which they simulate the catching and marking of the fish. Product Students execute and describe an experiment. Finally they write an advice for fish biologists in which they discuss the method which produces the most reliable estimations. |
Abstract Sometimes it is not possible to count the exact number of something, e.g. fish in a pond. You then have to think of other ways to estimate the total amount. You are going to work on that in this assignment. Documents
