Welcome @ WisWeb, Bienvenue, Willkommen

WisWeb is Freudenthal Institute's website for secondary math education (students of 12 to 18 years old). The main focus of the site is applets; small computer programs that run over the internet.

The applets are small interactive learning tools which students can use for several purposes, such as to explore a problem situation, to discover a representation or a concept, to construct and explore 3D-objects, or to practice a skill.

A selection of applets, software, instructional materials and other information is available in English. Some applets are also available in other languages: French, German, Spanish, Swedish. Additions are made to the English version of this site on a regular basis.

Please visit also the Freudenthal Institute website for more information on the work of the Freudenthal Institute.

For German versions of some of the applets see: Neue Medien im Mathematikunterricht. See also Japanese versions.

The DME

The DME, the Digital Math Environment, is a simple web-based electronic learning environment in which applets are part of instructional modules. Students can make their own account in the DME. This account allows students to save their work with applets. With an account, students can leave their work and log back in to continue their work any time, any place, particularly at home.

Schools can purchase a school account for the DME. At this time, school accounts are only available in the Netherlands and Belgium. In the near future schools outside the Netherlands will be able to purchase DME school accounts.

A school account for the DME offers several possibilities:

  • Activities (applets) can be organized by the teacher into learning sequences that can be made available to groups of students or classes.
  • The DME offers the teacher access to the students’ work. This provides a way to check students’ progress, to monitor the results of groups of students through class overviews, and to collect infomation and student work that can be used for grades.
  • The ready-made tasks in applets can often be configured by the teacher. New items within the applet task can be added and existing items can, for example, be adjusted to match students´ability.

DME learning trajectories

In the 'Wismaat-project' we designed several digital learning trajectories that can be used with the features of the DME.

Trajectory 1: Negative Numbers
Trajectory 2: Geometry 3d (not fully translated yet)

Special selections of applets:

Applets with algebra courseware on linearity
Applets with Mathematics in Context
