Program 2017

Three-dimensional geometry from primary to higher education

Mathematics Department of the KU, Leuven

Program

10.15    Presentation by Uitwiskeling
Hilde Eggermont, Eternal love
On June 21st on the cemetery of Laeken, you can witness a fascinating phenomenon. Due to the height of the sun and the construction of a remarkable grave monument you can see a beautiful heart of light. We try to understand the geometry behind this light spot. Ellipses and their axes play an important role in this search.

11.30     Short break

11.45    Presentation by GEM
Dany Legrand, Dominique Loreaux and Rosane Tossut, The beginnings of solid geometry for 15 year old pupils with GeoGebra
A GEM group is working on the introduction of solid geometry using GeoGebra 3D. Some worksheets have been written and tested in the classroom. We will present these experiences and we will share our questions on the relevance of the use of software in this field.

13.00    Lunch pause

14.00    Presentation by Freudenthalinstituut
Mieke Abels, Martin Kindt, Geometry is grasping space
This is what Freudenthal said in his beautiful chapter ‘The case of geometry’ in Mathematics as an educational task. In our presentation you will investigate and see how 2D representations can be helpful to grasp 3D situations.

15.15     Presentation by IREM of Lille
Sophie Bourreau and Romain Caillé, In the box
Street Art is 2-dimensional artwork drawn on the street itself that gives you a 3-dimensional optical illusion. What is the secret behind these eye-popping street art illusions ? Could we do such things? Do we need to be artists or scientists? We will try to answer these questions, focusing on anamorphosis. Then, we will work together, drawing on the floor the image of a 3D object. We will take pictures... so don't forget to smile in the box!

16.30    Short break

16.45    Conclusions and arrangements for next meeting

17.30    Big cultural walk in the centre of Leuven (about 3 km)

19.00    Very ‘clandestine’ dinner in the centre of Leuven
